If you are having a withdrawal from Downton Abbey, this book is the cure. The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson brings to life a community of people living in a pre-WWI England with class structures, women’s rights, and a nontraditional romance. I might have cried at the end.
The story revolves around a few characters but specifically a Latin teacher, Beatrice Nash, who is a free thinking woman left penniless by her father. She teaches in a small town for a woman named Agatha who’s husband works for the foreign office. During this time Agatha’s nephew Hugh Grange is visiting.
Can you see where this is going? Like Downton, The Great War begins and you see that the old ways will be tested and you see society’s ideals start to breakdown.
Check out the book, I really loved it and would recommend to for anyone to read. For next months Three Whims book pick check out Where’d You Go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple.
